Overview

About I Hate Watermarks

I Hate Watermarks is an open-source AI watermark remover that reveals and strips invisible characters from text produced by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other AI tools. If you have ever pasted what looked like clean text into a document, an editor or a publishing tool, and then noticed strange gaps, odd spacing or hidden symbols, I Hate Watermarks is built to show you exactly what is going on. Paste your text and every hidden character is highlighted in place with its name and code point, so you can see precisely which invisible characters are present and where they sit in your writing. From there you can copy or download a clean version of the text.

The tool removes zero-width spaces and joiners, byte-order marks, soft hyphens, direction overrides, variation selectors, Unicode tag characters and exotic spaces. At the same time, it is careful about the invisible characters your text actually needs. Emoji joiners and RTL marks, for example, are preserved unless you explicitly choose to remove them, so cleaning your text does not break emoji sequences or right-to-left languages. Optional settings let you normalize lookalike spaces and letters or apply NFKC normalization when you want a more thorough cleanup.

Privacy is central to how I Hate Watermarks works. Everything runs in your browser, which means your text never leaves the page and is never uploaded to a server. You can paste sensitive drafts and see the result instantly without worrying about where your content is going. The tool is also upfront about its limits: it can reveal and remove invisible Unicode characters, but it cannot remove statistical watermarks such as SynthID-Text. Being honest about what it can and cannot do is part of the product's design.

I Hate Watermarks is more than a single web page. An agent skill brings the same engine to Claude Code, Codex and other coding agents, so developers can clean text without leaving their workflow. The underlying MIT-licensed TypeScript library has no dependencies, making it easy to embed the same logic in your own projects.

It is free and open source under the MIT license. Whether you are a writer polishing a draft, a student working on an assignment, a professional preparing content or a developer building text tooling, I Hate Watermarks gives you a transparent, local way to inspect and clean the invisible characters hiding in AI-generated text. Writers, students, professionals and developers who use AI-generated text can use it to detect and remove hidden Unicode characters before sharing or publishing their work.
